It was an amazing adventure this one, not just because it starred a little girl and her cat, but because the adventures they had were crazy and fun. Some amateur seamstresses, such as my own mother, would also do this with ordinary sheets, as a cost-cutting measure.

Rosemary has broken part of the enchantment, but not all of it, and she and Mrs Pendlebury Parker's nephew, John, set out to break it. A delightful story for those who like impossible things to happen in a humdrum world…The children are lively, the grown-ups (including the witch) colourful and the mingling of magic and reality is most effective. Written in 1955 and part of a series of books that would span over 13 years of Sleigh's writing career, Carbonel is a magical-realism, rags-to-riches story (although the 'riches' part is not overdone at all) of a young girl and her mother who, with very little money, look to cover the costs of living over the summer.I was reading my mother's Perry Mason mysteries before I was reading Dick and Jane primers in elementary school, which got my teacher complaining to my mother that I was always finishing my books immediately instead of reading just the next two or three pages that were assigned.

It's quirky enough to impress anyone who desperately wants something good to happen but isn't greedy. The children are allowed to choose a present from a box of Miss Dibdin’s party crackers, and Rosemary picks an odd one that has a witch’s hat and a “Golden Gee-Gaw” (a magic ring) inside it. The children are distracted by accidental misuse of the magic ring bringing a road’s worth of cats’-eye reflectors to life as crab-like Scrabbles. ENGLISH: A nice story (first of a series) about the black cat of a witch which turns to be the long-lost child of the king of the cats in London. The children find a magic ring that enable them to hear Carbonel, and he tells them his tale of woe: his son and heir, Calidor, has abandoned the royal family and become a witch's minion.When Rosemary meets Carbonel, a cat prince, and agrees to help him gain his rightful place as king, it sparks a wonderful adventure filled with witches, magic and talking cats - just the kind of thing I always yearned to happen to me as a child. B., age 10: I liked it pretty well but I wish the broom could have lived because it was my favorite character. He is more like Edith Nesbit’s Psammead in Five Children and It [1902], speaking ‘with the voice of tart and faintly impatient adulthood. Nesbit came back into print; Edward Eager began his novels that started with Half Magic; Mary Norton had her series of Borrowers books; and C.Then they meet Dumpsie (whose real name is Wellingtonia), and learn that Mattins has betrayed Calidor to Queen Grisana and Princess Melissa, who plan to punish him severely with all the other Fallowhithe cats for the insult of Calidor’s rejecting the marriage. Carbonel and Calidor is more of a sequel to The Kingdom of Carbonel alone than to both earlier books. This shows that they really must be quite poor, to not own an up-to-date sewing machine, which was a basic item in the mid-1950s — especially bearing in mind that this is the way Mrs. Carbonel has been summoned to the presence of the Great Cat - who would guard his kingdom and royal kittens while he was away? The girl, Rosemary, continues to perform more favors for the cat when she enlists the help of John and the two of them endeavor to free Carbonel from his bonds once and for all.
